Prince William and Kate Middleton are officially engaged, as if you haven’t heard. “It will be the wedding of the century,” they say. “It will be the grandest wedding since Princess Diana.” Royal weddings have always made little girls around the world sit starry-eyed in front of the television, planning out their big wedding day as they watch the prince and princess wed. And while we seem to have more beach themed weddings here at Val Vista Lakes than anything else, for good reason, it’s always fun to have a ‘royal wedding’ every now and then.

A royal wedding theme, or fantasy fairy tale wedding, is all about delicate fashion and going big. In these rough economic times having a royal wedding theme might not be incredibly practical, but if you take some time to do some DIY projects it might be more affordable than you think.

Royal wedding themes and fairy tale weddings bring about ideas of ‘happily ever after’ and ‘dreams do come true’ and Disney fantasies that we all grew up on. That means ball gowns, petticoats, precious gloves, long trains and veils that sweep the floor. Shoes make a big statement as well. Think Cinderella, sparkles and class.

Like our recent blog on a Mad Men themed wedding, a royal wedding can also bring back a touch of vintage style. Vintage style is classy, and for a royal wedding theme the bridesmaids dresses should have a bit of pink, pearls and don’t forget the gloves. And for the groom and the groom’s men, go all class with a white tux and smooth suits.

And now for the fun stuff; the invitations and reception atmosphere. Putting together invitations for your royal wedding should involve elegant fonts, perhaps a splash of pink, maybe a ribbon or two, and rhinestones always make a strong royal statement.

Your royal reception will be full of regal curtains, dramatic molding and amazing chandeliers. This wedding theme is all about drama and going over the top, so thing big when it comes to centerpieces as well. A royal wedding would never be without monogrammed linens and cake toppers, more rose petals (probably pink) then you can count, ice sculptures, and plenty of candles.

One of the most dramatic and quintessential aspects to a royal wedding is the entrance of the bride at the wedding ceremony itself, and the entrance of the couple at the reception. Take full advantage of your wedding venue’s features. If there is a lake, which there happens to be at Val Vista Lakes, take advantage of that with a grand entrance on boat. As the reception, consider having a “page” announce your entrance instead of the DJ. And for the music, there really is nothing more royally themed or fairy tale then some good-old-fashioned Disney music. Consider a Disney wedding soundtrack.

While many of the mentioned ideas seem a bit over the top and expensive, they can all be achieved the DIY way as well. Download the reception music onto an iPod to save money, have a family member monogram the linens, search for trendy and affordable candles at thrift stores, and take advantage of venue discounts.

Pomp, romance and tradition produce a splendid spectacle, writes Paola Totaro in Westminster Abbey. On April 29th, thousands are lining the streets of London, billions are watching around the world, and celebrities and world leaders are arriving at Westminster Abbey to witness the much-anticipated royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The Splendid Wedding

A joyous Prince William has a wife – and Britain a new princess – after a spectacular service that entwined the most imposing ceremonial traditions of the 1000-year-old English monarchy with the quicksilver immediacy of the digital age.

Westminster Abbey, Gothic and ever mysterious, played witness to the young couple who took their vows before 1900 guests – among them kings, prelates and prime ministers. A million well-wishers listened in silence and later cheered on the streets and parks of London while 2 billion more the globe over watched on television or the internet – the first royal wedding to be streamed live.

Kate Middleton arrived at the Great West Door of the abbey on time, and on the arm of her father, Michael, in a morning suit. With her hair flowing beneath a small diamond tiara lent to her by the Queen, her willowy frame was sheathed in a fitted, full-length, elegant Alexander McQueen gown with long lace sleeves.

Royal Wedding Fashion

All eyes, of course, were on the bride’s dress — and it immediately became the stuff that dreams are made of. There was tradition and modernity, sober styles and touches of whimsy: the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton showcased Britain’s fashion roots, as well as the claim it’s staking at the forefront of haute couture.

The gown, whose details were kept secret until Middleton stepped out of the Goring Hotel to travel to Westminster Abbey, was a magnificent ivory confection with lace floral detail designed by Britain’s Sarah Burton, creative director at Alexander McQueen. Meanwhile, Clarence House has said the dress may go on public display

A plunging neckline added an edgy touch to an otherwise traditional dress with lace-covered sleeves that ended at the wrists. Her hair was half up, half down, lightly curled and decorated with a tiara. She wore drop earrings.

‘Buzzing with happiness’

It has been reported that their weekend stay include various royal residences. The honeymoon details have yet to be revealed. The couple, who married on Friday, has opted to delay their honeymoon, with Prince William returning to his job as an RAF helicopter pilot on Tuesday.

Places where the royal couple may be spending the weekend include royal residences such as Windsor, Balmoral and Sandringham.

Speculation about the honeymoon has continued, with suggestions including Africa, in particular Kenya, where the prince proposed to Catherine last year.

Jordan, where the duchess spent two years with her family as a child, has also been touted as a possibility, but continuing unrest in the Middle East could mean it is less likely as a destination.

A secluded Caribbean island – or an Australian island – might be a safe choice, we suggest.

Wedding Gown on display

The duchess’s ivory gown with lace bodice, designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, received approval from fashion world and the general public.

A spokeswoman for Clarence House said: “The Duchess of Cambridge is considering a number of options to give members of the public the opportunity to see close up the skilled British craftsmanship that went into the making of her wedding dress by Sarah Burton and her team as well as the Royal School of Needlework.”

The spokeswoman could not say exactly when or where it might be exhibited but a number of gowns worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, are displayed at Kensington Palace.

Royal wedding fever gripped the nation and also the world with one of the most anticipated and exciting events seen so far in the 21st Century. As parties flooded the streets with Union Jacks resplendent and traditional British fare on offer, the stoically English stiff upper lip quivered as we watched Kate Middleton, step from her car, ready to walk with poise down the long Westminster Abbey aisle to meet Prince William of Wales, the future King of England, and become Princess Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Royal weddings involving the current or future Monarchy have always garnered the fairytale whimsy amongst us and as a fashion conscious nation, we love nothing more than to watch the members of the royal family and guests with positions in high society flaunt their prosperity in what has become an essential part of any prominent wedding; their choice of designer. Much like the Oscars, the run up to these kinds of events now plays more like a sports event with statistics and predictions of who’s wearing what but the pomp and ceremony behind the Royal Wedding had a nation proudly waving its flags once more and has unsurprisingly inspired more people to adopt a more traditional approach to their nuptials. Thoughts of returning to church settings are beginning to resurface and rivalling the want to get married barefoot on the beach, which is good news for dress designers everywhere.

The traditions that set aside a royal wedding starts with the groom and their military prowess, gallantly demonstrated when Prince Albert married Queen Victoria in 1840. While Queen Victoria donned a sea of lace on a gown that presented a wide neck line that sat on top of the shoulders, pinched waist and full ruched skirt, Princess Victoria Mary of Teck could be credited with creating the inspiration for many a wedding cake as she and the bridesmaids wore full flowing gowns, elaborately decorated with flowers in her nuptials to naval officer and highly decorated King George V in 1893.

While the Duke of York, who later became King George VI, married the Queen Mother or Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon as was; the dress designed by Madame Handley Seymour, displayed a more simple line in its silhouette but it was decorated with ornate patterning on the front and framed by a cap veil. However, the standout feature as the soon to be Queen left for her wedding, was the luxuriously draped ermine stole with a simple coloured feathered effect off the shoulder, which kept the overall look in line with today’s fashions as bridal furs look set to make a comeback with current trends showing a renewed popularity as the smooth and opulent looking material seems to gracefully refine and elevate its wearer.

When it comes to those iconic wedding pictures, William and Kate’s bridal wear will easily fit into the regal cascade through the eras. However, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s family photographs will definitely stand out from the crowd thanks to their wedding party as they displayed a quite elegance alongside highly coloured modern styles that replaced the staunch formality of previous royal weddings. Both mater figure heads opted for sleek, smooth hued coat dresses that flattered both shapes with mother of the bride Carole Middleton wearing powder blue by Catherine Walker and William’s step-mother Camilla Parker Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall, in a gradient pale blue and nude by Anna Valentine. While the sisters Eugenie and Beatrice may have favoured opposite ends of the scale with Vivienne Westwood and Valentino respectively; each caught the eye with the spring trends of high colour and the latest fashions of forward facing statement hats. These themes seemed to carry through the guests with an abundance of feathers exploding from their frontal perch, making Westminster Abbey resemble an aviary.

The Queen dazzled in a matching soft lemon dress and coat by Angela Kelly with crisp white accessories while new family member, Princess Catherine’s dress exceeded expectations with its divine elegance, displaying full-length sheen with flower patterned strapless dress, covered to the waist with delicately embroidered sleeves and silky veil atop a vintage tiara; all put together by renowned Alexander McQueen protégé, Sarah Burton. However, perhaps the most subtle yet sophisticated dress came from the Maid of Honour, the bride’s sister, Pippa Middleton. Stunning in white; the simple scooped cowl neck gown, also by Sarah Burton was finished with an effortlessly dainty lace trim that has created a slew of internet sites dedicated to ‘that’ dress.

With a wedding that has commanded so much media attention for its fashion as much as its occasion, many may ask; will London ever see such a glorious spectacle grace its streets again?
